If you’ve had a massage before, you will know that you are given a glass of water immediately after your treatment and strongly recommended to drink plenty of water for 24 hours after. Now we don’t just want you to be properly hydrated after massage, we should all ensure we drink enough water every day to promote good health and organ function, but why in particular do we recommend drinking water after massage?
First off, massages can be dehydrating. Kneading and working muscle gets fluid pumping out of the soft tissue and into your circulatory system. Nutrients and oxygen are being delivered to the muscle at a faster rate, and this all uses water from your blood stream. The process of massage releases metabolic waste which heads out through the lymphatic system toward your kidneys. The increased amount of metabolic waste being processed and filtered through the kidneys makes them work harder and uses more water from the body.
So, it is true, you should drink water after massage in order to re-hydrate because your body is using water at a faster rate, but the key is to be drinking enough water EVERYDAY, whether you get a massage or not. Water is vital for every function that occurs in the body, and necessary to maintain healthy, hydrated muscle tissue.
